A Cape Sidecar Adventure in South Africa

The roar of an engine, the wind in my hair, and the thrill of the open road – that’s what we experienced on an epic day out with Cape Sidecar Adventures a few months ago.

A convoy of vintage sidecar motorbikes, and their drivers, awaited our large group as we exited our hotel after a delicious breakfast. Much excitement and banter ensued with all the delegates as we chose our sidecar bike and introduced ourselves to our driver. We were each given a helmet and retro pleather biker jacket to wear to keep off the chill (and to look uber cool, of course!) before setting off.

The Route

As the engines roared to life, we eased our way onto the winding Chapman’s Peak Drive. Selfie photos and giggles were aplenty as we traversed this picturesque and famous road.

We stopped at various lookout points en-route for group photos. This also allowed people to swop seats on the bike; each bike takes two passengers: one in the sidecar and one seated behind the driver. The weather played its part! It was bright and sunny with no wind, which made for perfect driving conditions.

We journeyed along the coast past the quaint suburbs of Noordhoek and Kommetjie. We all felt a bit like superstars as our convoy of noisy vintage bikes attracted a lot of attention from cars and onlookers! We passed Misty Cliffs and Scarborough before heading back to Noordhoek where a sumptuous picnic awaited us on the lawns at Cape Point Vineyards. Could this adventure day get any better?

Cape Point Vineyards

The Cape Point Vineyards is the only wine estate on the Cape Peninsula that offers 360-degree views of mountains, fynbos, vineyards and Atlantic Ocean vistas. This venue is the perfect spot for a picnic. Soft blankets, plump pillows and charming wicker hampers were waiting for us on arrival.

After enjoying a glass or two of chilled white wine we shared stories of our sidecar adventures. We unpacked our sumptuous picnic baskets filled with delicious goodies including bobotie wraps, chicken Waldorf salad, seasonal vegetable quiche, freshly baked ciabatta with olive tapenade, a selection of charcuterie and olives; Camembert with caramelized nuts and a decadent chocolate brownie with seasonal berries. A delicious spread that left us suitably stuffed afterwards! Some of us nodded off for a quick nap on the picnic blankets while others carried on chatting, sipping the gorgeous Cape Point Vineyard wines.

After lunch – once again, we boarded our chauffeur-driven sidecar bikes and headed home on a slow drive along Chapman’s Peak back to our hotel in Hout Bay. It was a fantastic day out for all ages… our Giltedge Incentives team can highly recommended it!
